Q&A

  • Q1: Are fourth-year students (as of the beginning of the 2022-23 academic year) eligible to apply?
    • 2022-11-07

A: Eligible students enrolled in four-year programs may apply prior to the commencement of their fourth year of study. Eligible students enrolled in five-year programs may apply prior to the commencement of their fifth year of study. Eligible students enrolled in six-year programs may apply prior to the commencement of their sixth year of study.

  • Q2: Can one apply for a university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program and a College-wide bachelor’s program at the same time?
    • 2022-11-07

A: Yes. If both are approved, however, an applicant may be enrolled in only one of these programs based on his/her specified order of preferences. It is recommended that the applicant consult first with the NTU Academic Advising Office.

  • Q3: Can a student already with double-major status apply for a university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program?
    • 2022-11-07

A: No. The reason is that a student enrolled in a university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program is also considered as having double-major status. The student must give up one of his/her majors before he/she can apply for a university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program.

  • Q4: The number of credit hours required for a university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program seems to be a disadvantage for first-year students. Am I right?
    • 2022-11-07

A: Students take basic cornerstone courses and those required by their respective departments in the first year, and they are expected to explore what their departments have to offer. They may then begin to explore other disciplines and specializations during the second semester. Student become eligible in their second year, when many possibilities in planning their academic paths await them.

  • Q5: If there are many more applications than initially expected, will the 2% acceptance limit be adjusted?
    • 2022-11-07

A: Current we have no plans to raise the 2% limit, which translates to about 70 students. The limit may be adjusted in the future, depending on the demand and resources available.

  • Q6: In addition to the proposal submitted to apply for a university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program, is an applicant’s academic record also taken in account when evaluating the application?
    • 2022-11-07

    A. The decision to approve or deny an application is based principally on the proposal and not the applicant’s academic performance. Aspects of the proposal that weigh heavily in the decision process include:

    (1) whether the applicant’s motivation for applying to the program is explained properly and the learning objectives are clearly defined;

    (2) whether the curriculum planning and learning objectives are aligned;

    (3) whether the internships, or practicum or topical courses are relevant to the planned curriculum; and

    (4) whether the designation of the interdisciplinary study as well as the name of bachelor’s degree sought are appropriate.

  • Q7: Who may I consult if I have questions about writing the proposal?
    • 2022-11-07

    A. Consult the Center for General Education if you have inquiries regarding how the credit hours are calculated or how the application forms should be filled out. If your questions are about how you should arrange the courses you will be taking, how you should designate your degree, etc., you may sign up for a preliminary interview/consultation session with the NTU Academic Advising Office.

  • Q8: Who may I consult if I have questions about the courses I’m taking to fulfill the requirements of my university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program?
    • 2022-11-07

    A. Consult the Center for General Education or the Undergraduate Academic Affairs Division of the Office of Academic Affairs if you have a question about the curriculum. For course advising, consult the Academic Advising Office.

  • Q9: How will the name of the degree appear on my diploma?
    • 2022-11-07

    A. Your department’s degree + University-level Interdisciplinary Bachelor's Program degree.
    Example:
If you have earned a degree in Philosophy and an Interdisciplinary Studies Program degree in Neuroeconomics, your diploma will be designated with the following:

National Taiwan University on the recommendation of the faculty of the Department of Philosophy, College of Liberal Arts and the interdisciplinary study in Neuroeconomics, has conferred upon _______________(name of student)

the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and
Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Study,
together with all the honors, rights and privileges belonging to those degrees. In witness whereof, this diploma is issued with the University seal in _______________________________
    (date).

  • Q12: Are the course selection privileges afforded to a student enrolled in a university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program when undertaking a specialization program the same as those of the students from the department offering the specialization program?
    • 2022-11-07

A: A student approved to be enrolled in a university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program will be given the same course selection privileges as the students from the department offering the specialization program.

  • Q13: The rules of eligibility for application state that [the applicants] should have completed at least one specialization program (or credit program or interdisciplinary specialization) offered by a department other than their own or have accumulated a total of twelve credits in courses from several specialization programs (including Level 3 courses from interdisciplinary specializations and/or credit programs). If the courses in these programs I’ve taken are scattered across several departments, can they still be used as prerequisites for my application to the university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program?
    • 2022-11-07

A: Yes, they can. These courses, however, may not be from the applicant’s own department. If the courses constitute a complete specialization program (or interdisciplinary specialization or credit program), it may be counted toward the four specialization programs required by the degree. If the courses span across several specialization programs (or Level 3 interdisciplinary specializations or credit programs), they may be counted as electives.

  • Q14: Why are only Level 3 courses in interdisciplinary specializations eligible?
    • 2022-11-07

A: Courses in interdisciplinary specializations include cornerstone courses (Level 1), core professional courses (Level 2) and interdisciplinary specialization courses (Level 3). Since the interdisciplinary specialization courses match more closely with those in the specialization programs, only Level 3 interdisciplinary specialization courses will be recognized.

  • Q15: Is a course timetable devised by a student enrolled in an Interdisciplinary Studies Program subject to the University’s approval? Or is it up to the student him/herself?
    • 2022-11-07

A: The specialization programs and their equivalents specified in the proposal require approval from the Center for General Education Review Panel.

  • Q16: Can a course taken as part of a student’s minor counted towards the specialization program prerequisites for the university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program?
    • 2022-11-07

    A. If the course is part of a specialization program, interdisciplinary specialization (Level 3 only) or credit program, the student may include it in the proposal and request that its credits be recognized.

  • Q17: May I include a credit program I’m enrolled at another institution of the National Taiwan University System in my proposal?
    • 2022-11-07

    A. No. The specialization programs, interdisciplinary specializations and credit programs referred to in the context of applying to a university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program are those offered by NTU only.

  • Q18: Will the credit hours from courses I’ve taken from another institution be applicable towards a university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program?
    • 2022-11-07

    A. No. Only credits earned from NTU courses are applicable.

  • Q19: Are students enrolled in the university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program also subject to the One-Half, One-Third Rule?
    • 2022-11-07

    A. Yes. A student is subject to dismissal if he/she fails one-half of his/her credit hours in one semester and one-third of his/her credit hours in the following semester.

  • Q20: Is the university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program an advantage or disadvantage if I intend to pursue a professional career in the future that requires skills from a specific major, knowledge acquired from specific courses, or a certain amount of time spent on internships?
    • 2022-11-07

A: With respect to pursuing careers that require skills from specific disciplines or professional fields, we recommend that our students in these disciplines stick to their original majors as it is a more secure strategy. They may also consult the Office of Academic Advising for suggestions that cater to your specific circumstances.

  • Q21: Students capable of planning self-directed learning are usually those who excel scholastically, so is the university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program geared towards elite students? Are students who are good at certain non-mainstream fields or those who are still unsure about their goals taken into consideration?
    • 2022-11-07

A: The program’s main objective is to provide students with multiple possibilities in terms of academic and career development, and it is not specifically geared toward students of any particular category, elite or otherwise.

  • Q22: Do the criteria for determining the Academic Achievement Award remain the same? If I’m enrolled in a university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program, the courses I take may be different from those of my cohort from the same department.
    • 2022-11-07

    A. The student status of a student enrolled in a university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program remains with the department of his/her original major, and for this reason the student’s department’s criteria for determining the Academic Achievement Award will apply.

  • Q23: If I were to give up my original major and graduate only with the university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program degree, that would mean I won’t be able to attend any graduation ceremony from any department, would it?
    • 2022-11-07

    A. In addition to the graduation ceremony for all graduating NTU students, you can also attend a ceremony held exclusively for graduates of university-level interdisciplinary bachelor's program.
